Wireless Telecom Strategy - Individual Liable and Security Risks
By Steve J Murphy
An individually liable wireless telecom strategy (where the employer encourages the employee to use their personal phones cell for business purposes - possibly expensing a portion of the phones cell charges on an expense report), creates a situation where the business asset (the phones cell number used to contact the company) leaves the organization when the employee does. This is essentially like giving up a DID number when the employee leaves, all incoming communication to that number is gone forever. Think about how many times and in how many places the wireless number has been published related to the business - typically, hundreds, if not thousands of times.
There is a common belief that a quick way to reduce telecom costs is to have employees use their personal wireless telecom service and reimbursing the employee a fixed amount per month. The thought is that the business is only reimbursing a portion of the wireless carrier bill, so they are saving money. However, this action negates any security procedures that would normally be in place for similar services and makes the company even more susceptible to fraud and theft.
So we have two issues, the first is the potential savings by a business allowing employees to expense just a portion of their personal phones cell. On the surface it is rational, "I save my firm money if I only allow a fraction of the charges of a personal account to be expensed." That may be true, but the second cost consideration also needs to be considered, "How much does it cost me in compromised security?"
The cost of compromised security is really unknown. You have to estimate the damage of a security breach (i.e. a lost phones cell, an employee taking their personal phones cell to a competitor if they change companies, viruses or hackers that might attack and compromise a device that communicates with the network, etc.).
The next estimate you have to make is the likelihood of a breach. These are extremely difficult factors to quantify, but they are real. So, in order to put together the proper wireless telecom strategy business case for a corporate liable plan, we need to include these risks. If you are concerned about managing a corporate plan, there are tools that can enable a very manageable wireless telecom strategy.
